It’s Renewal Time!

The Manitoba Writers’ Guild, your writers’ guild, is both delighted about the past year and enthused about our upcoming year. It has truly been a year of astonishing achievements and expanded programming, all strategized with one thing in mind, to provide the best opportunities for our members to engage, expand and enjoy your writing experience.

This past year we were able to increase the number of Critique Circles to four a month, including two Prose, a Poetry and a Memoir and Creative Non-Fiction event per month. In addition, we were able to offer more workshops for our emerging writers, with one Open-Mic event, two Ephemera Challenge workshops, one Memoir Writing workshop, one Self-Publishing (FriesenPress) workshop and one Red Tent seminar. For our published members, we staged eight Book Launches and four Book Chats. And of course, we held two major writing competitions, the Rabindranath Tagore Poetry Competition and the Dave Williamson National Short Story Competition, offering our members of all levels and genres the chance to achieve fame, fortune and publication of their work.

This coming year we intend to provide even more. In addition to the workshops we offered last year, we are planning an additional Self-Publishing seminar, a Creative Non-Fiction workshop, a World Building workshop, a Writing Your First Novel seminar, a Publishers Forum event, a Poetry Workshop, a Writing for Children Workshop, and a Formatting Your Book for Publishing seminar.

Other benefits include your digital membership card that entitles you to first-time subscriber discounts a Prairie Fire Magazine and CV2, as well as a free McNally Robinson Reader Reward Card (a $25 value). MWG also sponsors both the Sheldon Oberman Mentorship Program that pairs emerging writers with experienced professional writers to work one-on-one for five-month period that culminates in a public reading. And equally important, your membership also supports our Youth Program directed at providing individuality and empowerment through creative writing for a number of young Manitoba writers.

Your renewed membership runs from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, but you can renew at any time. As with all good things in our world, these treasured programs come with a variety of costs. We work diligently with numerous funding agencies to keep our membership fees as affordable as possible, and this year we have had many successes in that pursuit. In order to keep with the times and to provide the best writers’ guild that we can, we are increasing the membership fee by just $10 per year, to our new annual subscription rate of $75 for the year. For students and our low income members, we will continue to offer the Student/Low Income reduced rate of $40 per year.

We sincerely hope we have fulfilled your hopes and expectations this past year and we look forward to doing even more. Our door and our minds are always open to new ideas and suggestions, because the MWG is your writers’ guild, and we are only here to serve your writing interests and aspirations as best that we can.
