Black History Month: Celebrating Storytelling and Community

Every February, the Manitoba Writers’ Guild (MWG) celebrates Black History Month by uplifting the voices of emerging BIPOC writers, which is why the MWG offers programs like the Rabindranath Tagore Poetry Competition.

The poetry competition’s theme this year is “A Tumultuous Journey with a Bright Horizon,” speaking to both the challenges and the strength within BIPOC creative communities. It acknowledges the realities BIPOC writers face while celebrating the resilience that continues to shape the future of the local writing community. With submissions now open, the competition invites emerging BIPOC writers to share their perspectives through poetry, strengthening Manitoba’s diverse literary landscape. You can apply to the Rabindranath Tagore Poetry Competition here by March 16.

In addition to the poetry competition, the MWG offers ongoing opportunities – such as the BIPOC Critique Circle – that foster growth and creativity for BIPOC writers in a supportive atmosphere. By creating an environment rooted in these values, the MWG helps writers from all backgrounds strengthen the craft of writing.
