Gilbert was born in Ghana where he spent his formative years and graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in biochemistry from the University of Ghana. He obtained a scholarship to study in the UK and graduated with a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Leeds. He subsequently moved to the University of Manitoba to pursue an academic career, rising to the rank of Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine. Publications during his academic career were all in scientific journals.
He has always had a desire to try his hand at fiction and got the time to do so after retiring. Muunokhoi’s Awakening, an anthropomorphic novel, is his first. He has not studied the craft of writing and considers himself a storyteller more than a writer.
