Members’ Brunch Too Much Fun
By Steve Oetting
Needless to say, I was not optimistic when I read that the day called for a 10C temperature, a gusty 35 Kmh wind, and a 70% chance of rain. But what the weather forecast did not factor in was the warmth, camaraderie and energy of the MWG members in attendance.
On Saturday morning (June 13) at 930AM, twenty or so hardy Manitoba writers collected beneath the overhead shelter of Picnic Site 3 at Assiniboine Park for the Members’ Brunch, sharing coffee and tea, muffins and croissants, enchanting conversation and numerous readings. The small gathering created the perfect environment for folks to get to know more about their fellow members, their lives and their writing aspirations and achievements. New members, long-time members, several MWG directors, a few family members and one lovely young pup all joined in for what was a warm and friendly event.
Several members read poems and pieces of their short stories or novels, each one receiving a hearty round of applause. After the readings, a fun game of Name That Director was played with prizes for the folks that could identify them all. Even Mother Nature jumped in and held back her fury so nobody had to go home wet. It was a wonderful time had by all and one that we all agreed should be repeated in the future.
