Threads of Connection

By Lynda Faye Schmidt

Last Saturday I had the privilege of meeting MWG member Alison M. York at her book signing event hosted by Chapters Polo Festival. Alison was set up in a bright and welcoming space immediately to the left as I entered the store. She was engaged in conversation with a customer, so I browsed through the journal section. Sensory memories of my cross-Canada book tour in 2022 danced in my head—the hum of crowds, the thrum of nervous heart-palpitations, the scents of paper, ink, and perfume.

When my husband and I approached to make our introductions, we were met with friendly smiles by Alison and her husband, Roger York. We four shook hands, and soon found ourselves immersed in an interesting discussion about Alison’s life journey and the story behind her first published novel, Tartan Threads. I read the back cover summary, and as our conversation unfolded, I felt connected to Alison’s passion for storytelling and her exploration of themes like resilience, courage, and serendipity.

It seemed only fitting that more synchronistic life experiences would be revealed. Alison shared that she’d been a teaching assistant, working with young people who struggled with emotional and behavioral challenges. I taught in a similar environment for many years back in the days when I lived in Calgary. I decided to purchase a copy of Tartan Threads, to write this article, and to invite Alison to stay connected, as aspiring authors with big goals and dreams.

Back home and tucked in at my desk, I clicked on the Guild’s blog page and read Stacey Lupky’s piece that covered Alison’s book launch at Artspace in June. I wasn’t surprised to learn the event was well-attended or that Alison’s opening speech focused on gratitude. I felt our shared histories expand when I learned that Roger read a character passage from Tartan Threads, her husband as supportive as mine. Alison gave credit to the MWG Critique Circles in the development of her craft, and I’m encouraging myself to attend one in the near future.

Tartan Threads is available for purchase at Chapters Polo Festival in Winnipeg. When I finish reading my autographed copy, I’ll be sure to write and post a review. I know from experience how valuable it is for readers to share their feedback. The literary market is competitive, massive, and challenging to navigate, especially for new writers. I’m committed to supporting all authors, aspiring or accomplished, and I urge you, dear reader, to consider doing the same.
