The Manitoba Writers Guild mourns the loss of Victor Enns, who passed away December 9th in the beautiful Okanagan Valley. A founding member of the Manitoba Writers Guild in 1981, Victor was also the founder, publisher and long-time editor of Rhubarb Magazine, Winnipeg’s seminal voice for Mennonite literature and culture and the author of six collections of poetry. He was a frequent contributor to national literary magazines and anthologies and, among other leadership roles in the arts, Victor was executive director of the Manitoba Arts Council for several years.
Once he knew he was going to die, Victor did what Victor always did when faced with adversity – he wrote another book, Mein Todesbuch (My Deathbook) which is in the final edit and set to be published in the New Year. Victor even planned its launch, April 4th, 2026, the day after what would have been his 71st birthday, in Winnipeg.
The Guild would like to extend our condolences to Victor’s sister Marg, his kids, Alden, Theo and Bronwyn, and all of their families, and especially to Michelle and Leo.
